Story 2:
Trillium Farms was an egg farm that was found guilty of labor trafficking individuals from Guatemala. The head of the trafficking ring, Pablo Duran Ramirez, has pleaded guilty to encouraging the illegal entry of Guatemalan nationals, including minors, into the United States for financial gain. He operated through his company, Haba Corporate Services, providing labor to Trillium Farms while knowing that the workers were unlawfully present in the U.S. Some workers were unaccompanied minors coerced to enter the country and housed in an isolated trailer park in Marion, Ohio.
Trillium Farms paid Duran Ramirez's company around $6 million for labor services. Motivated by greed, Duran Ramirez violated immigration laws and contributed to the exploitation of vulnerable children. He faces a potential 10-year prison sentence, with a sentencing date set for Jan. 7, 2019. Three other defendants in the labor trafficking scheme have already pleaded guilty and received sentences for their roles in recruiting and exploiting workers, including minors, for Trillium Farms. The investigation is led by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, with prosecution by the U.S. Attorney's Office and the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section.
